Introduction
The surgical procedure for the Unique® custom femoral stem is in general similar to the techniques used for other uncemented femoral stems. However, there are some fundamental differences in the technique for implantation. The Unique custom femoral stem is via our design criteria exactly adapted to the geometry of the IM cavity in the patient's femur. Hence, for each Unique stem a custom resection guide and a broach are delivered so that the surgeon is able to achieve the pre-operatively planned resection level and the designated position of the stem per-operatively.

Surgical Instrument Set
SCP delivers a designated instrument set to our customers for the surgical procedure for the Unique custom femoral stem: The set consists of:
    • IM-reamer for fixation of the custom made resection guide.
    • Broach handle.
    • Anatomical pre-broaches in 3 sizes (both right and left).
    • Trial necks (6 sizes) and trial heads (22, 25 ,28 and 32 mm)for trial reduction.

Additionally a custom made resection guide, a custom made broach and the document "Data for Surgery" are supplied for each individual Unique custom femoral stem.

Surgical procedure

• The IM-reamer is inserted at the Fossa piriformis and the resection guide is fitted. The femoral head is resected in accordance with the pre-operative planning. A vertical resection medial of the trochanter major completes the resection of the femur.

• The proximal medullar canal is prepared with the designated broaches. The preparation of the femoral canal is finished when the upper edge of the custom broach is flush with medial aspect of the resection line.

• For trial reduction use the size of the trial neck described in "Data for Surgery" and the fitting trial head.

• Implantation of the Unique femoral component is achieved with the use of a femoral driver and a hammer. The stem is in the correct position when the proximal border of the coating is aligned with the medial aspect of the resection level.

• Place the selected femoral ball head on the taper and reduce the joint.
