10.09.2007 Promising early results from Sweden During the annual meeting of SOF (Swedish Orthopeadic Association) in Umea data from the first 22 patients operated with Unique customized femoral stem was presented. The authors concluded:"All implants could be inserted at surgery. The prosthesis was so accurate that a tight fit in the femur was achieved. There have been no complications related to the implant so far." Excellent clinical data from the Norwegian Arthroplasty register support the findings. (http://www.scp.no/download.asp) 19.03.2007 Excellent results with Unique customized hip implants In the Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association volume 4, 2007 dr Svein Svenningsen at Arendal Hospital is writing about his experiences with the Unique customized hip prosthesis. "Clinical experience with a custom-made hip prosthesis developed in Norway. Svein Svenningsen Background. A custom-made hip prosthesis is developed at St.Olav′s Hospital and the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim. The purpose was to design an uncemented stem for optimal fit of the proximal femur to achieve secure fixation and optimal strain distribution to the bone. A customized hip prosthesis permits reconstruction of the normal joint mechanism, including reconstruction of leg length, a physiological hip centre and a normal lever arm for the major hip muscles. 6 years of experience with the device at the orthopaedic department at Sørlandet Hospital, Arendal is presented. Material and method. 43 hips in 37 patients were operated. Median time of observation was 3 years (3 months - 6 years). The patients' age was on average 49 years. 70 % of the hips had hip dysplasia. The patients were followed prospectively, both clinically and radiologically for up to 6 years (median 3 years). Results. The operations were performed as planned in all patients with an average operation time of 96 minutes. We have had no re-operations, no post-operative dislocations of the operated hips and no infections. No components have loosened and no patient has complained of thigh pain. One patient had a per-operative femoral fissure that was treated with cerclage, and one patient had an affection of nervus ischiadicus. The mean Harris hip score was 49 pre- and 97 post-operation . Interpretation. He is looking forward to getting to know existing and new customers better. 31.01.2006 A new milestone has been reached In January 2006, more than 1000 Unique custom made prostheses have been produced and delivered to our customers through Europe. During the past 2-3 years, the number of hospitals using the Unique stem have steadily increased from 13, mainly Norwegian hospitals, in 2003 to 28 hospitals in 2006. We are currently producing custom made prostheses for hospitals in Sweden (4), Denmark (6), Germany (4), Belgium (1), The Netherlands (1), United Kingdom (1), Austria (1) and Norway (11). We believe the reason for the increased awareness and use of the stem is associated with the favorable and well documented design criteria and the good mid-term (7-10 years) results reported to the Norwegian arthroplasty register.
